Asia Lacquer Craft Exchange Program (ALCEP) in Shanghai, China 2019
Lacquerware, International Co-operation
November 3, 2019
The China Program was organised in partnership with Shanghai University, the Myanmar Lacquerware Association, and the Tokyo University of the Arts. The Program consisted of an exhibition of international lacquer art at the Shanghai University of Fine Arts from 1 to 3 November 2019. Over 50 lacquer artworks were exhibited. In addition, there were lectures by lacquer experts and workshops on Myanmar, Japanese, Thai and China lacquer techniques, as well as study tours to lacquerware studios and shops on 2 and 3 November.
The purpose of the Asian Lacquer Craft Exchange Program was to promote natural lacquer arts, crafts, industry, and education throughout Asia. ALCEP did this by bringing artists, artisans, educators, and scientists together for seminars, workshops, and art exhibitions. At these programs, participants exchanged information relating to the world of lacquer. We discussed the situation of lacquer art and education in each nation, learned new techniques at the workshops, and viewed contemporary lacquer art from around Asia and the world at the exhibitions.
The goal of the seminars, workshops, and exhibitions was to increase and intensify communication and exchanges between lacquer communities. We endeavored not only to inform the public, but also to expand and strengthen the worldwide network that binds lacquer artists, artisans, educators, and scientists together.
