Sone-Tu is a social enterprise producing handwoven textiles made of hand-spun or machine-spun cotton and silk.
HANDWOVEN TEXTILES FOR HOME AND FASHION
Throws, cushion covers, runners, and scarves are handwoven on traditional looms by Chin women in Rakhine State. Whilst their traditional cultural heritage is preserved, Chin women are taught
weaving skills enabling them to earn a fair wage.
We offer both traditional and contemporary designs. The intricate designs are based on original Burmese weaving patterns, originally used for Burmese costumes. The contemporary designs are
inspired by traditional patterns, but they have been customized to meet the demands of international markets. Sone-Tu is also experienced in co-creating your own designs, enabling your
product to be fully customized!
UNIQUE QUALITY
Sone-Tu’s own range of products comprises two brands:
– Sone-Tu, a unique high-end handwoven range of intricate home textiles
– Shalapar, contemporary range of everyday home textiles
All cotton products can be machine washed – unique for handwoven products.
Silk products are to be handwashed. All products have a care label.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
SONE-TU’s successful initiatives and activities include:
1. The Metta Breeze Education Programme – enables Chin children from remote areas to attend school, receiving food, housing, and tuition.
2. The Weaving Masterclass Training Programme – provides intergenerational weaving training that transfers skills from elderly master weavers to young weavers.
3. The Weaving Heritage Programme – preserves weaving patterns and techniques of the different Chin sub-group by helping the weavers earn a living from weaving. Moreover, it supports the revival of the ancient art of weaving Sarsikyo, the binding ribbons used to secure Buddhist palm-leaf manuscripts.
All Weaving and Education Programmes are currently based at our compound in Minbya, Myanmar.
